Planning for your next elearning project? Check out our project start-up checklist.

The Elearning Project Start-up Checklist provides a list of questions you should consider before developing your next course.

Are you planning for your next elearning project?

Ready to commence your next elearning (or digital learning) initiative? Starting to establish a scope for your project?

Before diving into your next project, there’s some planning that should happen to ensure that all stakeholders have a shared understanding of the project’s goals, content, and limitations.

In our experience, this generally includes:

Defining Learning Objectives

  • Identify the core goals of your elearning module.
  • Determine what learners should know or be able to do after completing the course.
  • Where possible, try and create objectives or outcomes that are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART).

Identifying your target audience

  • Define your target audience. Gather information on their demographics, prior knowledge, and learning preferences.
  • Consider any potential barriers to learning (for example language barriers).

Documenting known scope and resources

  • Consider the desired length of the course.  This preference should factor the time commitment for learners, and time commitment expectations from the organisation depending on the topic and drivers.
  • Consider preferences for how you’d like the course to look and feel, including any existing brand guidelines
  • Identify Subject Matter Experts (SMEs)  who have in-depth knowledge of the topic, and their availability for consultations, content reviews, and feedback.
  • Set a budget that aligns with your overall project goals.
  • Gather and document any source materials.

Planning for success

  • Engage people or teams that have experience in delivering elearning projects within your organisation.
  • Identify any elearning standards or Learning Management System (LMS) guidelines that may exist for your organisation.
  • Define how you will measure the success of the elearning course by establishing Success Metrics, and how these metrics can be reported within your organisation.

While AI has revolutionised many aspects of content creation and translation, when it comes to localisation in elearning, human expertise remains irreplaceable. AI-powered tools like neural machine translation (NMT) can assist with the initial phases of localisation by handling bulk translations efficiently. They are useful for standardising phrases or ensuring linguistic accuracy. However, localisation goes far beyond mere translation—it involves understanding cultural norms, regulatory nuances, dialects, and emotional context, which are areas where human insight is crucial.
