Cross Cultural Consultants named AITD Excellence Awards finalist for digital learning transformation

A partnership built on cultural integrity and practical learning design

Cross Cultural Consultants is a First Nations owned and managed organisation with a strong reputation for delivering cultural capability programs across the Northern Territory and beyond.

Their work has always been grounded in real stories, lived experience, cultural knowledge and respectful learning. Traditionally, this learning has been delivered face to face, often requiring facilitators to travel significant distances into regional and remote communities.

That face-to-face model remains incredibly important. It creates the space for storytelling, discussion, yarning, reflection and deep cultural learning.

However, as demand grew across government agencies, community organisations and other sectors, Cross Cultural Consultants identified a clear opportunity. They needed a way to extend the reach of their programs while protecting the cultural integrity and human connection that made the learning so powerful in the first place.

The goal was not to replace face-to-face cultural learning.

The goal was to strengthen it.

Together, Cross Cultural Consultants and Lucid designed a digital learning ecosystem that could support thousands of learners, provide a consistent foundation of knowledge and create more time and space for deeper facilitated conversations.

The need for scalable cultural capability training

Across Australia, organisations are increasingly focused on building culturally safe, respectful and responsive workforces.

Cross Cultural Consultants was experiencing growing demand for its programs, particularly across the Northern Territory. However, the traditional delivery model created practical challenges.

The program was much more than a single elearning module.

Custom elearning designed for accessibility, engagement and cultural respect

The elearning modules were designed with three priorities in mind: cultural integrity, learner engagement and accessibility.

The program needed to be clear, respectful and practical for a wide range of learners. Some learners were new to cross cultural concepts. Others had prior experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Some learners were based in major centres, while others were accessing the learning from remote locations with unreliable internet.

To support this, the learning design included:

  • illustrated facilitator avatars
  • cultural scenarios
  • photo stories
  • hotspot interactions
  • text reveal activities
  • reflection points
  • knowledge checks
  • relatable workplace examples

The modules introduce important cultural frameworks gradually, including concepts such as deep and surface culture, communication styles, time orientation, individualism and collectivism, cultural protocols and the impact of historical and contemporary experiences.

The design avoids overwhelming learners. Instead, it builds confidence step by step.

In this case, that meant creating elearning that felt human, grounded and respectful.

The digital modules provide a shared foundation. Learners can build baseline knowledge before moving into deeper conversations with Cross Cultural Consultants facilitators.

This gives face-to-face sessions more value.

Rather than using workshop time to introduce every foundational concept from the beginning, facilitators can focus on richer discussion, real-world application, yarning, scenario exploration and reflection.

The digital learning supports the human learning experience. It does not replace it.

This distinction matters.

Since implementation, the program has supported between 5,000 and 10,000 learners annually through the Cross Cultural Consultants learning platform, with further reach through enterprise licensing across NT Government.

The program has been adopted across sectors including:

This reach represents a significant shift from the limitations of traditional face-to-face delivery alone.

This is particularly important for remote and regional learners, who may otherwise face barriers to accessing training.

The program also helps organisations align cultural capability learning with broader workforce development, diversity and inclusion, cultural safety and Closing the Gap Priority Reform 3.
